# YouTube

> YouTube videos that AI platforms cite when answering questions in your category, and how to earn citation value from creators.

Erlin tracks every youtube.com and youtu.be URL that AI cites across your tracked prompts and shows you which videos mention your brand, what the sentiment is, and which competitors appear in the same videos.

All three citation types ([publications](/ai-visibility/citations/publications), [Reddit](/ai-visibility/citations/reddit), and YouTube) appear in the same Citations view in Erlin. Click the **YouTube** tab to filter to YouTube sources only.

## What YouTube citations are

AI models index video content primarily through transcripts, video descriptions, titles, and metadata. When a well-known reviewer, educator, or creator discusses products in your category on video, AI can pull from that video's transcript when answering user questions.

YouTube citations represent voice-of-creator authority. A mention in a popular tech reviewer's video can carry more weight with AI than a mention on a smaller blog, because YouTube videos often accumulate engagement signals (views, comments, likes) that AI models use as quality indicators.

## Why YouTube citations are different from publications and Reddit

**Stickier over time.** Popular YouTube videos stay relevant for months or years. A review video from 18 months ago can still be actively cited by AI if it ranks well on YouTube search and maintains engagement. This makes YouTube citations more stable than Reddit (which rotates quickly).

**Harder to influence directly.** You cannot edit someone else's video. Unlike publications where you might request a listing update, YouTube content is fixed once published. Your options are: get featured in new videos, or create your own.

**Transcript quality matters.** AI indexes the spoken word via auto-generated or manual transcripts. If a creator says your brand name clearly and discusses your product's strengths, that transcript content becomes available for AI to reference. Videos with poor audio quality or no transcript may not get indexed effectively.

**Creator relationships are the lever.** Unlike publications (where SEO and outreach work) or Reddit (where organic participation works), YouTube visibility comes primarily through creator relationships and your own channel's content.

## What Erlin tracks

For every YouTube URL cited by AI, Erlin records:

* Source URL (the specific video)
* Source domain (youtube.com or youtu.be)
* Citation count (how many times AI cited this video across your prompts)
* Platforms (which AI models referenced it)
* Brand mentioned (whether your brand appears in the video's indexed content)
* Sentiment (positive, neutral, or negative based on how your brand is discussed)
* Influence score (0.0 to 1.0, based on citation frequency and engagement signals)
* Competitors mentioned (other brands discussed in the same video)

The YouTube tab surfaces only sources on youtube.com or youtu.be domains.

## How to read drilldowns on YouTube

When you open the drilldown for a YouTube citation, Erlin analyzes the video's page content and reports:

* Whether your brand is mentioned in the title, description, or transcript-derived content
* Your rank position if the video contains a product ranking or "top X" list
* Competitors mentioned in the same video and their positions
* Sentiment toward your brand based on the language used in the transcript
* The excerpt containing your brand mention

**Interpreting YouTube drilldowns**: videos where your brand is featured as a primary recommendation (ranked in the top 3, mentioned in the title) carry significantly more citation weight than videos where you are briefly mentioned in passing at minute 14.

## How to act on YouTube citations

YouTube citations respond to a creator-relationship strategy. The actions:

**1. Identify the creators AI already trusts.**

Sort the YouTube tab by influence score. The highest-scoring videos are from creators whose content AI cites most. These are your priority relationships. Note which creators appear repeatedly: a single creator with 5 highly-cited videos is a better investment than 5 creators with one video each.

**2. Get reviewed or featured by those creators.**

A mention in a well-cited creator's video has downstream citation value that lasts months. Approaches that work:

* Send product for honest review (do not demand a positive take)
* Offer early access or exclusive features worth covering
* Sponsor a comparison or "best of" video in your category
* Collaborate on educational content where your product is a natural fit

**3. Optimize your own YouTube channel.**

If your brand has a YouTube presence, ensure:

* Video titles clearly name your brand and the topics you want to be cited for
* Descriptions include relevant keywords and a clear summary of content
* Transcripts are accurate (review auto-generated captions and fix errors)
* Content is structured clearly: AI extracts better from videos that name products explicitly rather than referring to "this tool" or "option number three"

**4. Sponsor content with citation potential.**

Not all sponsorships have citation value. Prioritize:

* Comparison/review videos (these are what AI cites when users ask "what's the best X?")
* Educational content in your category (cited when users ask "how do I do Y?")
* Creators whose existing videos already appear in your citation data

Avoid sponsoring content types AI does not typically cite (vlogs, entertainment, unrelated topics).

**5. Monitor for competitor-heavy videos.**

If a highly-cited video mentions 5 competitors but not you, that is a gap. Check whether:

* The video is recent enough that you could get featured in a follow-up
* The creator covers your category regularly (opportunity for future content)
* You can create competing content on your own channel targeting the same query
